I spent my birthday money.
This bike purchase was dangerous in ways that I did not expect. This fucking RevZilla is like an online crack dealer. I’m like “ooh...that ...and that ....aaand that!”
They also have the best customer service of any on line store I have ever used, and they send you discounts so they keep you addicted to their shit.
Don’t buy motorcycles if you like having money and hate buying shit you don’t need just because it would be awesome on your bike. Don’t be like me. Drive a Camry. Be responsible. Don’t covet parts.
I had this exchange with the lady who donated the Spitfire after she came to my house to get it after I stored it:
It ain't like I'm the only one.

Revzill is the best and worst ever. Have you checked out their YouTube channel? The reviews are fantastic

Yep, that’s where I got my helmet from, and where I’ll probably buy a jacket from. Luckily I haven’t thrown much money at the bike up to this point.

V ery nice. How do you like it? I’ve been eyeing XSR700's. It will be my first bike, so not going 900 any time soon but from what I understand the two are pretty similar.

This was/is my first bike. I really like it, and the ABS and traction control are definite bonuses on the XSR bikes. Mine has been good to live with, the lack of faring and windscreen mean that above 60mph it’s rather breezy, and in a headwind it can get rough in a hurry. I love the exhaust of 700’s 270° Twin sound. An exhaust makes them sound really mean (the triple in the 900 isn’t nearly as angry sounding).
I think the X SR700 has optional saddlebags, which is a nice option to have if you wanted to ride places.

Hmmmm. Have you found yourself overwhelmed at any point?
I ask because I keep seeing really good deals on bikes that have a bit more power and can’t help but be tempted. I’m super risk averse and cautious and consider myself a very aware and defensive driver, but so many places caution not to go with something like your bike as a first motorcycle.
S have you ever found yourself uncomfortable or surprised by the power as a result of this being your first bike?
Thanks

Contrary to the image I may have, I’m also really risk averse. For the first month I owned it I rode it in throttle map “B” aka “rain mode”. At this point I’ve never turned the traction control completely off, and it does a pretty good job of killing any and all wheelies whether you want it to or not (although the way it hacks the throttle is kind of annoying and abrupt). If you’re moving up to a bigger bike I’d look for something with TCS and ABS if possible.
Have I been surprised? Well... it’s really fucking fast, like *really* quick. 115hp on 400 lb bike but I’ve been more surprised at how docile it is if you ride it like a cruiser. Yeah, it’ll power wheelie in 1st and second, but as long as you know that it’s probably not going to catch you out. That being said, there’s a big difference between a 900cc triple and a true liter bike, so I wouldn’t go buy an R1 or anything.
My only real advice is to skip 500cc bikes and buy a 650 or bigger you feel comfortable with. I’ve ridden a couple of friends 500cc bikes and I feel like I would’ve grown out of them really quickly.

La tely I’ve been looking at MT09, Z900, GSX-S750, so pretty much what you have but more naked than retro, but still along the same lines.
To your point, those are all up there with some of the quickest cars I’ve owned but, you know, on a bike (which I can only imagine adds a much more intimidating element what with wheelies and wind and no safety cage ).
I would be more than happy on an FZ07, but when a same year and same mile FZ09 costs the same amount, it’s hard to not consider it.

FZ/MT -09 is the same bike as mine, only the plastic bodywork is different. Beware that early FZ-09’s had poorly mapped electronic throttle-by-wire setups that were panned by journalists ( which they fixed on the FZ-09 with the introduction of the XSR900). Another thing to watch for is ABS vs non-ABS models, I’m pretty sure the base FZ-09 didn’t come with ABS standard.
My uncle talked me into the 900 over the 700, and it’s been a good bike for me. Also, for reference I’m 6’-0” tall and around 240 lbs, so the bigger bike suits me, but Jake had to tiptoe it when he rode it. It’s a reasonably light bike but it’s fairly tall.
Side note: I’m hoping Yamaha decides to build an XSR-1000 at some point with that awesome cross- plane 4 cylinder from the MT-10/R1. It sounds beastly.

Yeah, I’ve seen the reviews about the xsr900 and how the early fz09 has throttle issues. I’ve read it can be tuned to be more tame though.
I think a taller bike would be good for me. I’m 6' and want to be as upright as possible. I’ve even considered a sport tourer equivalent like the fj09, but I don’t like how heavy it is.
An XSR1000 would be awesome

I’d like to ride an FJ-09 sometime, I like that style of upright sport touring bike. I was mostly looking at 650 Versys’ when I found my XSR.
